Shayara (The saga of Shayara-so-far: was going to be a comic, then a webcomic, is now mostly-text on the web.) I am dissatisfied with the current state of things. Simply: Shayara is not working in its current form. When I originally planned to put Shayara on the web, I gave myself several months to pre-write; I'd planned to write a few chapters, send them out for art, and then post them morsel by morsel. Instead, I got the worst fibro flare of my life. Moving hurt, let alone typing. I spent about two months on the couch, all told. I was still in flare when I launched the site. So I went up not pre-written, scrambling for art, scrambling to understand the web tools. And due to my condition, I've not been able to get that backlog I needed. My body and brain are variable, to the point that I cannot count on having any writing time of substance every day,and therefore cannot count on having Story to post twice a week. Especially while also scrambling for art and collaborating on music and and and... Sure, I've been keeping it up. But it's been first-draft-y. And this story needs more. The "wake up and post whatever comes into my head" approach works for Wind Tunnel Dreams, but it just flat-out does not work for Shayara. So part of the turmoil of the last few months has just been realizing that - that they just work differently. Through all of this, all of the struggling with web stuff and answering questions about marketing and scrounging for art, I've just been saying, over and over, "I just want to write!" So I'm just going to write. This is what's going to happen. I'm going to just sit down and write. And since I can't guarantee work of the quality I require on the schedule I've been keeping, I am not going to be keeping to that schedule. I will write all of Act One. As I write Act One, I will send each chapter out to the artists. When I'm done with Act One, I'll start posting it - a chapter a week - as I write Act Two. The site will stay up in the meantime; there's plenty there for you to explore. (I'll also be continuing Katrina's story as I go.) I launched the site despite the flare because I needed to prove to myself that, after years of waiting on other people, I could do it - that Shayara would not just languish in my brain forever. To prove tomyself that I could do it. But, dear reader, I need to do it right. And what I've discovered is that I need time and space to do that, time and space that the current schedule will not allow. Chronic pain and fatigue require a lot of adjustments in one's life. I hadn't realized how much I needed to adjust for them in this part of my life. So I'll get Katrianna to a nice pausing point, and I'll regroup. And when I come back, I'm gonna knock your socks off. Things (plural) * First of all, happy birthday to both theloriest and oneagain! Loves ya guyses! * I don't think I mentioned that I went to the evening meeting of the Glens Falls Writers Group for the first time in eons last week. 'Twas quite a blast and a half, with a bunch of people I knew there even though I haven't been going regularly since the Clinton administration. It already seems to be helping with the self-motivation thing regarding the Incredible Lumbering Novel Thing, so I'm going to try to make a regularity of it, as the saints and/or employers allow. For secret admirers and their secretly admired I may regret this. No, actually, I'll probably regret this. Then again, I usually regret it when I make myself tacos for dinner, and that has hardly stopped me. So: I have enabled anonymous posting, and will leave it enabled until 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday. If there is anyone on my friends list whom you are interested in, have a crush on, fantasize about or just plain lust after, you may anonymously say so here. Say whatever you feel the need to say, but keep it positive, in the spirit in which this post is intended. ( Note to readers: Since I've left the parameters of what constitues "interest" and "what needs to be said" wide open, be aware of the possibility of NSFW comments, although that may not be the case. Also, be aware that I have no qualms about deleting this post and related comments altogether as needed; in short, please don't be a jerk. Thank you.) Topics Week 28 Good afternoon.
It's that time again Top 5!
Wow, that feels weird.
*takes a moment*
Anyway, here are the topics that will be having their way with you this week.
Did I say "topics"? OF COURSE I did. I promised an uphill climb, and I meant it.
This time around you have:
Not Waving But Drowning Finding Faith in Myself My Hero
There's a bit of theme there that I didn't actually intend when I picked them off different parts of my "List O'Stuff". Hmmm... interesting...
You have until Friday May 23rd at noon EDT to have all three entries linked back here.
Good luck, and seriously, have fun!!! |

Things I Arf With Clarion coming up, I find it increasingly hard to write. All of my fellow Clarionites, so far as I can tell, are working busily on other projects... But me? I look at it and go, "Well, I can't sell the novels I wrote before Clarion, so clearly I'm not doing it correctly as it is. So anything I write pre-Clarion will need to be re-written from the guts up come the end of Clarion, which seems like work. Why not just start fresh?"
So I haven't been writing anything, just waiting around for the blessed touch of Clarion to magically make me a good writer. This is odd, since I've almost always got two or three projects bubbling somewhere.
But the weirder thing is that it's making it a little harder to combat the seasonal depression this time 'round. As it turns out, when I feel bad about life, retreating into the imaginary world I'm constructing for a short story/novel and tinker-toying with concepts is a good way to forget my blues. I'm never happier than when I'm creating. And having no projects to tuck myself into is turning out to be a little odd, because I can't suddenly ask myself, "Oh, wait, how in hell could a dragon survive as a predator when it would have to eat so much that it would strip the surrounding countryside?" and then devise a Very Clever Answer to that for my latest botched book.
Fortunately, I've realized this, so I'm now kicking around ideas for my next novel idea-cum-short-story, and retreating fairly heavily into that. But it's very odd not to be taking those concepts and immediately stringing them down to paper. But I figure I'm clearly not writing well right now, so why try to put more wounded words to paper where I'll eventually just have to put them out of their misery anyway?
(Under normal circumstances I'd just revise an old novel, but lemme tell ya - when your brain is flooding you with artificial senses of self-worth, the last thing you want to do is go look at your own writing. You might as well just shove rusty razor blades up your colon and be done with it.) |

Eliminations Week 27 Holy Grap People!!! Our final week of immunities in Season 4 and we turn out TWO CONTESTANTS BREAKING THE PREVIOUSLY SET SEASON 4 VOTING RECORD (and one coming really really close). (there were a couple moments there that I thought we were shooting for the "all time" mark!) AND ANOTHER IMPORTANT MILESTONE.(see below for that one). This week we say goodbye to n_decisive and superhappytime n_decisive was one of those contestants that people seemed to notice right off as being a contender. But not in an "OMG she's going to destroy us!" more of a, yeah, she has a good shot at winning, and I'm ok with that." Amazing writer and tremendous supporter of the process even when other people chose to remain silent you could always count on her to speak up when she thought something needed to be addressed. I really can't say enough good things about her. She's truly going to be missed around here. superhappytime on the other hand. . . heh, ok, I need to be serious, even though I've been known to give the guy a hard time now and then. The truth of the matter, from Day 1 he *really* reminded me of pseudonymjones from Season 3. Which is a pretty high compliment considering that was most people's early pick to win the the whole thing last season. Even when he was saying there was no way he was going to last, I saw that same spark in his writing. That said, I promised a few paragraphs up to talk about another major accomplishment this week. I did some checking and I was in fact wrong with something that I've said multiple times this season. lifeofjason came in *7th* in Season 2. mezzominty did come in 6th during Season 1, so technically there is a tie, but considering that was out of 9 and this is out of 155 I think it's safe to say that superhappytime can now officially be considered the Most Dominant Male to Ever Play Idol with a 6th place finish. Congratulations!! I know you both would have liked to go further, and there are many people who have supported you over these last *7 months* who would have loved to see that happen. But 6th and 7th out of 155? I don't think that's anything less than amazing and you both should be really proud of what you have accomplished. Thank you for everything. |

I am brilliant Setting up wireless networking with DSL is NOT like setting up a home network with cable, let me tell you. I spent over an hour fidgeting with two small boxes and a laptop. But I have managed to get the laptop connected wirelessly, and Greg's PC connected wired through the power line in another room. So yay. All of this is a direct result of... WE ARE MOVED. Paid the movers a lot of money to get all our junk into this 3 story house, but it was worth every penny not to have to move it ourselves. We're going to order the essential missing items tomorrow, and then have a long term plan for what other furniture we need. Love the house. Love it! Once the boxes are at least a little more unpacked, I'll snap some pictures. Current Mood: accomplished |

And then they raided the fridge for French bread pizzas and pudding pops Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Cosmic Catnip Soap Bubbles: the best entertainment that $2.75 can buy. Not much in the "bubble" department (those of you who were at Arisia '08 on Saturday night, they're about like that, only marginally better in terms of cohesion), but try telling the cats that. All evening it's been five minutes of alternating between eying the spherical terrors warily and attacking them bloodthirstily with battle cries and extended claws, following by a half-hour of growling and licking the carpet. Almost makes me forgive Sunny for deciding that the bathroom is a suitable place to urinate since it's where the Hairless Apes What Feeds Them go, only since we keep the bathroom door closed, the door is as far as she gets. The Funniness Of Things Even though I had planned to stay at home working on Saturday night, years of social conditioning have taught me that Not Having Plans on a Saturday night - and worse, the fact that my wife is so busy she is rightfully ignoring me - makes me feel like a big, big loser.
I suppose I could have made plans. But now I'm just staring at the Internet in between large file transfers, hoping something amuses me. Bleah.

Green Room - Week 27 - Weekend Edition As we wait for the polls to reveal whatever they are going to reveal, I was looking back over the season. It's kind of like watching a repeat of a show, you go back through and look for the clues that were left that tell the tale of how you got to the end. Some random things that struck me as interesting - maybe you'll be interested too, probably not, but hey, maybe - Number of players in the Top 7 who signed up ON PAGE ONE: 2 (both of them have immunity this week btw) Number of players in Top 7 who signed up ON PAGE 6 (there were 7 pages, but the last one only had two names and my comment that we were closed): 2 (neither one has immunity this week. ORIGINAL TRIBES. Tribe 1: 3 Jury Members. 1 in the Top 7. tulip_in_yellowTribe 2: 3 Jury Members. 2 in the Top 7. superhappytime, n_decisiveTribe 3: 3 Jury Members. 4 in the Top 7 chite, kittenboo, imafarmgirl and porcelain72Number of Top 7 left who were on my FL in Week Zero - None. Number of Top 7 who are on my FL in Week 27 - 4 Number of Top 7 currently on my FL who have immunity this week - 0 Number of Pepsis kithan has consumed since Week 0 - 1,000,002. Many of heart breaks - many Many of times being overwhelmly happy for people - many more Friends made this season - a ton Numbers of foes made this season - define "foe".*G* First time this season that I "took everyone aside" with a "people will try to tell you that you can't do it" talk: (seems to be) week 5 People that I am proud of for how well they did this season: 155. |

Eles and Paintings Last night I mentioned I wanted to make a serious post. This is it! :) I'm also making this a public entry, so if anyone wishes to link to it, please, feel free! Recently, two dear friends of mine made me aware of a very depressing situation that's become a problem among elephants in Thailand. I know many of you on my friends list watched the Elephant Painting video at YouTube. I saw the video posted in quite a few friend's journals. At the time, I thought it was a cute novelty. I've since learned that these 'artistic' elephants don't simply take happily to creating artwork. They are put through an intense, often cruel training program that can be very frightening to them. My two friends are in tune with elephants. They've worked with elephants. They have been involved in aiding elephants in need for years. I trust their take on the situation. They have seen this artwork produced up-close and had a chance to really watch the elephants as they painted. The poor things seemed terrified of making a mistake. Once I learned the real story behind the paintings, I found this situation intolerable and I asked what I could do to help. I've been given some information and links to pass on to anyone else who may care about the plight of these elephants. Most of what follows are my friends words. I've just tightened up the information a little for the sake of making this post. I'm deliberately not mentioning their names, as I would be more comfortable letting them volunteer their identity and adding any further clarifications or thoughts in comments here, if they wish to. There are a few things you can do to help. One is to write Exotic World Gifts - they're the company who posted the original YouTube video of the ele painting. Now, a quick read of their site has all of us believing that they honestly don't know the training that goes behind an elephant "learning" how to paint. (An ele doesn't learn how to paint a flower or a self-portrait, they learn how to memorize all the steps in order to do so.) So we're hoping that if they get several hundred emails from concerned folks, that they'll do a bit of independent research and learn it's not just environmental crazy folk beating their drums...but will learn the real, honest to goodness (and horrible) facts...and they might take down their YouTube video and stop selling those paintings. The second thing you can do (and heck, you could even include this in an email to Exotic World Gifts) is share a link to the award winning National Geographic video - skip to the chapter called "Training Crush". We're hoping if everyone who receives a link to the YouTube video of an ele painting sends out a link to the National Geographic video showing how the ele learned how to paint in the first place, that the tides might turn. Finally, there's a good little article just posted at Elephant Nature Foundation. I think the author has summed the situation up well in this short, meaningful article. Please, read it. Vote! Week 27 A few words from clauderainsrm: It's one shake-up after another. But by now, you're pretty much used to that. Anyone who knows where the next step is going to be at this point is either fooling themselves, or well they know me pretty well!*G* I gave the jury time to deliberate before results started coming in because their decision was going to be a hard one. They didn't realize it was going to be making one of the biggest impacts in the game thus far! Which is only appropriate considering that this is the last week where the jury is in place. I gave them the usual instructions. Read the entries and rank your favorites 1-7 (1 being the best). I told them to do this separately with each topic. Which means, you would think, that we would be handing out TWO IMMUNITIES this week right? *shakes head* Nope. Because it's the person with the lowest vote total in the first one, the person with the lowest vote total in the second, and the person (other than those two) with the lowest *COMBINED* vote total. That's right, in a field of 7, *3* of them are off the hook this week and have a spot in our Top 5. The other four will have to fight for those last two spots!! Who has immunity? It was *close* in all categories, but in the end the three spots went to: chite imafarmgirl porcelain72 So congratulations to you, and thank you to the jury for your hard work over the last couple of weeks! As for the poll… voting starts now and will close Sunday May 18th at 9am EDT. That's a really short window for such high stakes! The vote totals for each entry will be combined, the two with the lowest vote totals will be going home. Good luck to all of you. All of you deserve to be here, and all of you deserve a spot in the Top 5. Unfortunately though people do have to be cut, and it's up to the voters to decide who that is going to be.
